This
captivating ceramic stands around 27cm tall to the highest point of the
artist's easel. I bought it around 1975 in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, England
from a retail furniture store called Oaks. I was told then that the piece
was a limited edition, but that no two pieces were actually the same.
They had no idea how many pieces formed an edition as the box and packaging
(and probably some kind of certificate) had been lost.
As
a budding artist with a love of the female form, I just had to have this
work. To this day I find the couple utterly captivating, with their elongated
limbs and benign smiles, both totally absorbed in the moment. I would
have needed to take a dozen photos to begin showing the depth of charm
and character this amazing piece portrays: The careless abandon with which
the artist has treated both his tools and the flowers in the vase upon
which his palette rests, to the delicacy and grace of his sitter, quietly
at ease in the knowledge of her beauty - I adore it.
